their veterans were issued bronze diplomas in which their citizenship was formally confirmed, and they were granted the right (<strong><em>conubium<\/em><\/strong>) to marry citizens or non-citizens.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-bd799d0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"bd799d0\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e59a92d\" data-id=\"e59a92d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af511d8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"af511d8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>THE INDUCTION PROCESS<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>STAGE I:<\/strong><\/p><p><strong><em>Probatio<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; An inspection\/ interview was conducted under the authority of the governor.<\/p><ul><li>Criminals, slaves and non-citizens were prohibited from enlistment in the legion although non-citizens were later allowed.<\/li><li>In times of need, the citizenship requirement was waived. These inductees were recognized as being born <strong><em>in castris<\/em><\/strong>, accorded membership in the Pollian tribe and given a Roman name. (Recorded in accordance with the <strong><em>lex Iulia municipalis<\/em><\/strong> as <strong><em>nomen<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>praenomen<\/em><\/strong>, father (or former master if a freedman), tribe, and <strong><em>cognomen<\/em><\/strong>.) Non-citizens who were granted citizenship assumed the <strong><em>nomen<\/em><\/strong> of the reigning emperor i.e., a man inducted in the reign of <strong><em>Tiberius<\/em><\/strong> might be named <strong><em>Tiberius<\/em><\/strong>&#8211;<strong><em>Aulus<\/em><\/strong>&#8211;<strong><em>in-castris<\/em><\/strong>&#8211;<strong><em>Pollian<\/em><\/strong>&#8211;<strong><em>Longinus<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li><li>The minimum age for recruits was 17 and over (as per the legislation of <strong><em>Gaius Gracchus<\/em><\/strong> in 123 BC), although exceptions were made.<\/li><li>Candidates bearing letters of recommendation\/introduction (from their fathers or someone with prior\/current service) were more favourably received.<\/li><li>A medical examination was conducted, and <strong><em>Vegetius<\/em><\/strong> says that \u201cthe young soldier&#8230;ought to have a lively eye, should carry his head erect, his chest should be broad, his shoulders muscular and brawny, his fingers long, his arms strong, his waist small, his shape easy, and his legs and feet rather nervous than fleshy.\u201d Defects that did not hinder one\u2019s ability to fight were ignored.<\/li><li>A minimum height of 6 feet was preferred for the 1st Cohort 5 feet 10 inches for all others [modern equivalents are 5 feet 10 inches and 5 feet 8 inches]. The recruits came forward and repeated it. Most recruits were sworn in as part of a large group at the annual renewal of the oath.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6c28367 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6c28367\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-762434f\" data-id=\"762434f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c9c8157 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c9c8157\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The text of the pledge to the emperor has not survived. The obligatory oath was renewed annually on January 03 under the Flavians. In general, it included promises:<\/p><ol><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ol><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ol><li>to obey orders<\/li><li>not to break the law<\/li><li>not to desert<\/li><li>not to flee the battlefield or to abandon one&#8217;s place in the battleline except to recover or fetch a weapon, save a friend or strike an enemy and<\/li><li>to brave death in the service of the state\/emperor<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol><p>The oath was repeated by one soldier and the others present all said \u201c<strong><em>idem in me<\/em><\/strong>\u201d.<\/p><p>Although it has been suggested that recruits were issued with a <strong><em>signaculum<\/em><\/strong> (a precursor of the modern-day dog tag) comprised of a leather pouch worn around the neck with an inscribed lead tablet. No <strong><em>signacula<\/em><\/strong> have ever been found, with the exception of those related to physical property (inclusive of slaves).<\/p><p><strong><em>Vegetius<\/em><\/strong> states that inductees received an indelible military mark (perhaps a tattoo or brand on the hand) to discourage desertion.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-bd97919 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"bd97919\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3bdd065\" data-id=\"3bdd065\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-307389c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"307389c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>STAGE III:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Recruits received a pay advance (viaticum), typically three pieces of gold, to finance travel to their designated units.<\/li><li>They were generally escorted in groups by military detachments.<\/li><li>Recruits were assigned to specific units. The unit leaders were notified by a letter which introduced the recruit(s) and identified any distinguishing marks. The names of the recruits were then formally inscribed on a nominal role, and they were recognized as soldiers.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b1f5e6b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b1f5e6b\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-985f739\" data-id=\"985f739\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-537e506 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"537e506\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>BASIC TRAINING<\/strong><\/p><p>Training varied and was conducted in all types of weather over a four-month period.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6e23380 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6e23380\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e117516\" data-id=\"e117516\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-333b1bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"333b1bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>PHYSICAL<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><u>Marching<\/u>: The first concept that new soldiers learned was the military pace. <strong><em>Vegetius<\/em><\/strong> said Roman soldiers should march 20 Roman miles (18.4 imperial\/statute miles or 29.6 km) at the common military step or 24 Roman miles at the full step in 5 \u2018summer hours\u2019 before pitching camp. Those goals are idealistic, and the amount of ground covered depended upon the topography, whether the men marched on paved roads or soft ground (in which case 8 miles per day or less is more likely), the weather, if being harassed by enemies, the size of the baggage train, etc. Understanding how Romans treated time is important. Days were 24 hours long and equally split between day and night. However, the number of minutes assigned to each hour fluctuated depending upon the season and geographical latitude. In Italy, the daylight winter hour averaged 45 minutes whereas in the summer a daylight hour was 75 minutes.<\/li><li><u>Drill<\/u>: Vegetius placed a heavy emphasis on discipline and drill, but no 1<sup>st<\/sup> century army manuals have survived. <strong>Flavius Mauricius Tiberius Augustus<\/strong> (Maurice) ruled Byzantium from 582-602 AD, and he was responsible for the<strong><em> Strategikon<\/em><\/strong>, a Roman military manual (written in Greek). its reforms remained intact for close to five centuries, and equivalent training texts were not generated until the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. His Greek text was published in 1981 followed by an English translation in 1984. (George T. Dennis, Univ. Pennsylvania Press, ISBN 0-8122-7899-2). The organization and composition of Mauricius\u2019 forces was different from those in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> century. We do not know whether earlier Romans pronounced their words used the same mixed singular or plural imperative commands as Maurice.<\/li><li><u>Physical Exercise<\/u>: Exercise consisted of running, jumping and carrying heavy packs.<\/li><li><u>Swimming<\/u>: Recruits swam during the summer if their camps were adjacent to water.<\/li><li><u>Vaulting onto a horse<\/u>: This part of physical training involved all recruits and employed a wooden horse. Exercises were initially performed without weapons and equipment.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">General<\/span>: As the recruits improved, they were issued weapons to use during physical training. Exercises increased in difficulty until military pace was achieved.u<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-66a9a54\" data-id=\"66a9a54\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7440dc7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7440dc7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>WEAPONS<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><u>Sword<\/u>: The soldiers employed wooden swords and round wickerwork shields, both double the weight of normal service equipment. Practice involved attacking six-foot wooden stakes. As a recruit\u2019s experience grew, standard service swords and shields were issued.<\/li><li><u>Pilum<\/u>: Soldiers trained with a heavier than normal weight pilum. They developed arm strength and marksmanship by targeting stakes. After the soldiers had become comfortable with their practice pila, they were issued service models.<\/li><li><strong><em><u>Armatura<\/u><\/em><\/strong>: Once they were proficient with a gladius and pilum, the men were paired to train in individual combat and mock engagements using wood weapons equivalent in weight to service weapons. When real swords and pila were finally employed, the tips were shielded with leather buttons to prevent injury.<\/li><li><u>Bow<\/u>: 25-33% of recruits received bow training using stakes as targets.<\/li><li><u>Sling<\/u>: The art of throwing stones by hand and with a sling was taught.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>FIELD-SERVICE TRAINING<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>The final type of basic training involved field action. Under the supervision of an officer, soldiers in full equipment (66 lbs\/man) and 17 days of rations marched at a military pace on unfamiliar routes, and established practice camps with <strong><em>fossa<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>vallum<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong><em><u>Ambulatura<\/u><\/em><\/strong>: Battle formations were practiced on 10-mile marches thrice monthly. They included forming single and double lines, wedges, squares, and circles.
